Education and Outreach

Aquascape has maintained an active role in education and outreach for the general public, regulatory community, and educational institutions. Aquascape has recently provided a training session to PADOT Environmental Managers featuring wetland construction techniques on disturbed land and a presentation titled "Incorporating Biodiversity Into Constructed Wetlands" during the Knox AMD Workshop organized by the Knox District Mining Office of the PA DEP. Aquascape has also been asked to prepare a comprehensive training program for engineers and field staff of the PA Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, which will feature wetland construction techniques that maximize biodiversity and successful establishment of vegetation.

Aquascape has hosted field tours on several completed and work-in-progress abandoned mine restoration sites for a wide range of groups including local colleges and universities, grade schools, scouts, environmental professionals, and employees of local, state, and federal government agencies. The Goff Station Restoration Project was featured as a part of the 2000 and 2001 Pennsylvania State Watershed Academies, the Stream Relief Tour, and a field portion of the Pennsylvania Restoration Professionals annual meeting. Additionally, artificial habitat structures incorporated into the Goff Station Restoration Project have received national attention by being featured in local, Pittsburgh, and Associated Press newspapers and television stations. The Goff Station Restoration Project has also received attention as a feature on the PA DEP's Green Works web page.

Aquascape has demonstrated a commitment to fostering and maintaining community relations by providing opportunities for public involvement and promoting understanding. This dedication to education and outreach has resulted in recognition as a leader in mine reclamation and innovative problem solving by the regulatory community and the private sector.
